Reghecampf blasts ´childish´ Steaua mistakes

Steaua Bucharest coach Laurentiu Reghecampf has called on his side to learn from the childish mistakes made in the 3-0 loss to Schalke.

Goals from Atsuto Uchida, Kevin-Prince Boateng and Julian Draxler after the break were enough to secure a win for the German side in their UEFA Champions League opener, much to the frustration of Steaua, who created a flurry of chances in the early stages of the second half.

Steaua were making their first appearance in the Champions League since 2009 and Reghecampf insists his side must improve if they are to make progress.

He said: We have to learn from these mistakes. They scored at their first goal opportunity.

This happens in football when you make childish mistakes. We can beat Schalke in Bucharest.

Sporting CP 0 Barcelona 1: Coates own goal puts Catalans in command of Group D

Barcelona extended their winning run to eight games in all competitions on Wednesday as they edged past Sporting CP 1-0 in their Champions League clash at the Estadio Jose Alvalade.

Ernesto Valverde s side rarely had to get out of second gear to secure a win that puts them in a commanding position at the summit of Group D.

The only goal of the game came just four minutes into the second half, and despite Luis Suarez wheeling away to celebrate, replays showed that the decisive final touch came from Sporting defender Sebastian Coates.

Bruno Fernandes had a wonderful opportunity to claim a share of the spoils for Sporting in the second half but was thwarted by Marc-Andre ter Stegen, as Barcelona held on for a deserved three points.

The Spanish giants wil…

Butcher set for Hibernian switch

Hibernian plan to unveil Terry Butcher as the club s new manager on Tuesday after agreeing compensation with Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

Butcher was targeted by Hibernian last week following the departure of Pat Fenlon and watched from the stands as Inverness recorded a 2-0 win at Easter Road on Saturday.

Despite that success, Butcher and his assistant Maurice Malpas, who took charge against Hibernian at the weekend, have expressed a desire to leave Inverness and their wish now looks set to be granted, providing personal terms can be agreed.

In a statement, Hibernian chairman Rod Petrie said: We are grateful to Inverness Caledonian Thistle for the professional and courteous way in which the discussions between the clubs have been conducted. We now look forward to wel…

Inter concede defeat in Yaya Toure race

Inter coach Roberto Mancini has conceded the Serie A giants are unlikely to sign Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure this transfer window.

The Inter boss previously worked with Toure during his time in charge of City and was keen to lure him to San Siro ahead of the 2016-17 campaign.

However, Mancini has now admitted there is little chance the 33-year-old will continue his career at Inter.

I say that he remains one of the greatest midfielders around in the game, Mancini told Sky Sport when asked about a potential move for Toure.

But I think there is no chance he will be joining Inter.

We have no regrets, though.

Toure has a contract with his current club until the end of the 2016-17 campaign, but his future at City is in doubt foll…

Barcelona is Barcelona – Umtiti not ready to leave Camp Nou despite Lyon interest

Samuel Umtiti has revealed he held talks with Lyon during the transfer window but did not want to leave Barcelona on bad terms.

After a promising start at the club following his 2016 switch from Lyon  where he had spent the previous 14 years  Umtiti has struggled for form and fitness, particularly since the start of 2018-19.

He has made 77 LaLiga appearances for the Catalan giants and ranks highly for interceptions since 2016-17 began, averaging 1.73 per game behind only Jordi Alba (2.09) among those still at the club.

A return to Lyon was on the cards during the close season but Umtiti would rather turn things around at Camp Nou first.

Everything was possible during the transfer window, he told Canal+. Lyon is my club and my city. They gave me the op…

Taking the Mkhi: Henrikh dazzles with trio of assists on Emirates bow

Henrikh Mkhitaryan enjoyed a dream full debut for Arsenal as Arsene Wenger s men thumped Everton 5-1.

Aaron Ramsey might have claimed the match ball by completing the scoring and his hat-trick 16 minutes from time, but Mkhitaryan notched a treble of his own by cutting the ball back to set up the goal.

The Armenia international claimed three assists in total, having also set up Ramsey s opener before playing in Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on his former Borussia Dortmund team-mate s Premier League bow.

It saw him match the number of goals created for Arsenal in the Premier League this season by Alexis Sanchez, whose switch to Manchester United brought Mkhitaryan to north London.

No Arsenal player has supplied more assists in a single game since Santi Cazo…

Pep Guardiola believes Kevin De Bruyne will be in Ballon d Or contention if Manchester City go deep into this season s Champions League.

De Bruyne produced his latest playmaking masterclass, laying on three assists as Sergio Aguero s four-goal haul saw the Premier League leaders thrash Leicester City 5-1 at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

Manchester United s tepid 1-0 defeat at Newcastle United on Sunday left City 16 points to the good at the summit, with a third top-flight title in seven seasons now appearing to be a formality.

Attention turns to Europe s premier competition this week, with City travelling to face Swiss champions Basel in the last-16 – granting De Bruyne his latest chance to prove he resides among the finest players on the planet.

Capello hopes Higuain stays at Milan

Fabio Capello still hopes Gonzalo Higuain can be a success at AC Milan, but he fears the forward will leave San Siro to play for a coach who can get the best out of him.

Higuain joined Milan from Juventus on a season-long loan ahead of the Serie A campaign but has failed to show his best goalscoring form netting just eight times in 21 outings in all competitions and rumours persist of a mid-season switch to Chelsea.

Maurizio Sarri is in charge at Stamford Bridge and, like Capello at Real Madrid, has worked with the Argentina international previously while with Napoli, overseeing his record-breaking 36-goal Serie A campaign in 2015-16.

The former England manager believes Higuain may push for a departure if he feels Gennaro Gattuso cannot play to his strengths in M…
